Irene Miller, 50, was arrested on four counts of child neglect without great bodily harm after deputies found her four children alone in a Kissimmee home. The mother was taken into custody on Friday morning as she exited a plane, according to Osceola County Sheriff’s Office body camera footage. She was subsequently booked into the Orange County Jail.
Miller left Florida on Oct. 18 to work in Las Vegas. She told deputies she had arranged for a babysitter from Tampa to assist the children with morning school routines and check on them later in the day. The sheriff’s office stated that the sitter was not required to provide overnight supervision.
On Oct. 21, one of Miller’s children called 911 to report that a dumbbell had fallen on the head of her 9-year-old brother. Deputies arrived at the home shortly after 8:30 p.m. and found four children, ages 9, 11, 12, and 14, with no adults present. Fire rescue crews transported the injured boy to Celebration Hospital, where he was treated and released.
A deputy contacted Miller by phone that evening. She confirmed she was working in Las Vegas and planned to return on Oct. 23. Authorities then reached the children’s father, who agreed to take all four children to his home. Detectives coordinated with him to meet Miller upon her arrival.
Sheriff Chris Blackmon said the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office will not tolerate child neglect. He stated that these cases will be investigated and charges will be brought against parents who are not properly supervising or caring for their children.
