Jordanian authorities have secured the custody of three armed men responsible for a fatal shooting at a Greek Orthodox church in the Karak governorate. The suspects were found hiding in an abandoned residence in the village of Al-Jadeeda. State media reported that the men refused to surrender and exchanged fire with security forces. All three were detained after sustaining injuries during the confrontation.
The incident began on Friday when three gunmen opened fire during a funeral service in the village of Hamoud, located approximately 120 kilometers southwest of Amman. The Ministry of Health announced that eight people died in the attack, while 40 others were injured. By Monday, 27 of the wounded individuals remained hospitalized. The director of Prince Ali Military Hospital in Karak noted that one patient continued to face critical health challenges following surgery.
A government source told Al Jazeera that the standoff at the abandoned house lasted roughly three hours. During the engagement, the three suspects suffered serious injuries, with one reported to be in critical condition. Petra News Agency stated that no security personnel were injured in the clash. Investigators recovered firearms and live ammunition from the scene after the suspects were taken into custody.
The Public Security Directorate issued a statement confirming the arrests. The directorate declared that the suspects had met their just fate and emphasized that the state would not tolerate terrorism. The official release did not specify which group the suspects might be affiliated with. Government Communication Minister Mohammad Momani described the operation as a successful joint effort on social media early Monday.
King Abdullah II expressed condolences to the families of the victims and stated that those responsible would receive the harshest penalties. The monarch also directed a review of national security protocols for responding to such attacks. Interior Minister Mazen al-Faraya said authorities are investigating the factors that lead young people to embrace violence. He confirmed that all participants in the attack would be held accountable.
The Karak region is home to a substantial portion of Jordan's Christian minority. That community comprises roughly 300,000 individuals within the country's total population of 11.5 million. The recent violence has drawn national attention to security measures in areas with significant religious populations.
